Artane Dublin

Map of Artane

See our large, interactive Map of Artane for more detail, including satellite views of Artane.

Artane (Ard Aidhin in Irish) and also sometimes spelt Artaine, is a suburb of Dublin, Ireland.

It is home to the Artane Boys Band which was set up in 1872 in what was then an industrial school run by the Christian Brothers for orphaned boys. Note that the Artane Boys Band now allows girls to join but everyone still calls it the Artane Boys Band.

In 1969 the school was moved to the old refactory, while it's previous building became a secondary school. The Artane Boys Band still continues to this day, but now it also comprises girls.

In February 1981 a fire in the Stardust Nightclub, Artane, killed forty-eight people, which is known as the Stardust Disaster

Artane is also the birthplace of award-winning director Gary Shore, whose most well-known work is based on the Northside suburb.

Hi guys
Could anyone tell me how I may be able to trace some of my ancestors whom I believe were in Artane school - there names were Peppard and I believe they would have been there around the 1800 - 1885 they were two young boys ? Any assistance on this would be much appreciated - thank you

Artane Industrial School
my grandfather was sent to the Artane in 1915 to join his brothers. I wrote to the Christian brothers who have an archive of most admissions/releases. I am happy to pass on the contact details if it would help anybody searching.

Hi mot12 just to let you know that there is place in Atlone that you can get information on children who attend industrial schools in Ireland. Here is the number 0906483625 ring them and tell them what it is you are looking for info on. They are very helpful. They will sent you out an application form. Hopefully this will help you to get some more info.

my dad attended Artane between the years of 1945-1953. His name is Francis odonnell,( he also has another name Frederick Alexander Odonnell)
The reason behind this is not really known. He was sent to tipperary to work on the farm of the Ryans of Templederry. My dad is still alive and we would like to get some more information for him. Does anyone know where we can get the admission records from, or can anyone remember him. we would be most appreciated for your help
