Cabra

Map of Cabra

See our large, interactive Map of Cabra for more detail, including satellite views of Cabra.

Map of Cabra, adjacent to The Phoenix Park.

Cabra is a suburb on the northside of Dublin city in Ireland, approximately 5km north-west of the city centre. Much of Cabra was built in the 1940's as a result of a building program for public housing by Dublin Corporation. Before it was built, the area was mostly fields and open countryside on the edge of the city. Many of the people who moved to the new suburb were from the rooms and tenement buildings of the city centre.

Some famous children to have come from Cabra include world champion boxer Steve Collins and singer Dickie Rock. Also from Cabra was Matt Whelan one of the Manchester United, Busby Babes who died tragically in the munich plane crash. Another sportsman from Cabra is Republic of Ireland International Goalkeeper Wayne Henderson. Cabra West has many factories in the industrial park and also along Bannow Road. One of The most famous of these being The Bachelors beans factory.

Cabra was built in the 1930's I was born in 1935 on Fassaugh Rd. Cabra. West Cabra was built in the 1940's. I was old enough to remember the first houses being built on Fassaugh Ave. West Cabra.

Hi yellowhammer,

Are you still living in or around Cabra? You must have seen huge changes there over the years.

I've only been in Dublin a few years, and I find the pace of change incredible - even in the space of five years, some places are unrecognisable.

My Dad helped run the First Football Team in Cabra West.
He was a POSTMAN They played on the field by the old Tin Church.(Father Burke was Parish Priest)
Anybody in their late 60s now should remember those days.
I have lived in England since the late 50s.
Anyone out there who went to St Peters School 1948-1953.

hello everyone from Cabra and Cabra West. I mostly spend my teenage years around the old play ground (lare) on the bridge old Cabra across from Matt 's, Good times. Now a days it's the GAA club still enjoyed by all the local's. Home was Kilkierana road still is home even though I've lived in Canada for 17 years Germany before that. Lucky enough to get home some.
The Bogges name was changed to John Paul second when the Pope came to Ireland late 80 ( not sure of year) everyone still know's it as the bogges and the roundabout on Fassaugh Avenue is now named Bogges Roundabout. cool ya . Happy Xmas and the best of Irish for the new year. Funny xmas mass is never the same as it is in Precious Blood for me anyway.

I grew up on Ventry Drive, now living in New York for many years. Anybody remember the shop vans ?. Finnegans van was in business for a long time. You could get your messages on the Thick and pay for them on a Friday. there were other vans too, Johnner Duffy's, Larry McKeon's. Collin's on Ventry Road. There was also a shop van on Broombridge Road But I don't remember who owned it, Anybody know ?.
"Some People" were a great pop group from cabra west. The lads were Con Brien, Anto Dunne, Yanno Connelly, and Christy Kavanagh.
A great amount of musical talent was in Cabra West. If anyone reading this is/was a player I would love to hear their story.
Also love to hear from anyone who attended St. Finbar's school in 1959 1960 1961

some people band
Makintosh
The Brother was a friend of Connie O*Brien and Yanno from Some People. They played at my Wedding in 1962.
Connie was a right Commedian I regret to say the last I heard of Connie was that he was in a Mental Hospital. That was about 4 years ago so not sure why he was there or if he is now out.
The Brothers used to go to St Peters Hall Dances
I guess that how they became friends with the Band. Did you ever hear of a Band called The Chimes the lead Singer is related to my Sister-in-Law. He lives on Bannow Road ,I have lived in England for 50yrs so only know all this through the Family.

Football Competitions in The Most Precious Blood
Hi everyone just joined today, found your web site by accident and have spent most of last night and today reading some very funny stories that bring back a lot of very special memorys to me, especially around the late 60s and early 70s.Im presently living in Barnsley South Yorks.I was born in Rothunda Hospital on 29th March 1958,at that time we where living in Rutland Street in Dublin. In 1962,yes I was only 4 yrs of age but I can still remember as if it was only yesterday,Me Ma and I walked from Rutland Street up to Cabra West,we took the short cut through the Most Precious Blood Church to end up at the top of St Finbars Rd.Me Ma fell in love and said straight away, "This is where we are going to live".She knocked on every door on St Finbars Rd and asked the occupants if they would like to sell their house, but no one wanted to sell.We both finally arrived at the last house, number 13 on St Finbars Rd , ajoins onto Carnlough Rd.Me Ma walked up the drive to number 13 and said to me, "This is our last chance", She knocked on the door with a loud thud and I remember saying to myself "Oh my God we are going to be thrown off this property".It seemed like hours, but eventually the door opened.I looked at me Ma, whom had an angelic look on her face(I think she won the best actress of the year award that year.)Stood at the door was a Giant,he bellowed in his broad Dublin accent "What do you want". Me Ma straight to the point said, " I want to buy your house and before you answer Ill offer you οΎ£1000".The young man was taken aback and said eventually, "Excuse me what is your name"?Me Ma answered, Maura Ryan and this is my son Brendan". The owner of number 13 introduced himself as a Mr Keeley and said to me Ma, "It just happens that Im thinking of selling up and It may be your lucky day".I looked at me Ma and by the look on her face she had won the football pools.Me Ma was very quick to respond and said I need to know today if you will sell or not because I have also but in a offer for another house on Nephin road(Total lies).Mr Keeley replied "Come back in an hour".Me Ma grabbed me by the hand and scarpered from that house as quick as she could and said to me," What are we going to do for an hour"? Next door number 14, I noticed three young girls playing in their front garden with their Da.The Da noticed me Ma and said,"Hello I overheard your conversation would you like a cup of tea to pass the hour".Me Ma accepted his kind offer and we both had tea and biscuits at number 14.The man and woman who lived at number 14 became life time friends to me,Dinny and Ann Brennan, children Brenda ,Marian and Caroline.Well the hour passed ,me Ma went back next door and made the deal to buy the house. We lived in that house for five very happy years but unfortunately me Ma died five years later only 32 when she died very sad day but Ill always remember the very happy days I had living in Cabra West.Dinny and Anne Brennan, when me Ma died reared me and my sisters Adrienne and Dorothy until me Da Michael remarried two years later.I will always be in Dinny and Ann Brennans Debt, they are both now with the angels but their spirit still lives whithin me,God bless them both.....Brendan x
