Sandymount

Sandymount (Dumhach Thrá in Irish) is a seaside village in the district of Dublin 4 in Ireland. Previous names for the area were Brickfield Town and Scallet Hill, a rabbit warren.

The area is bounded on the Strand Road and Beach Road side by the sea at Sandymount Strand and Merrion Strand. To the north is Irishtown on the way to Ringsend, and to the west, Ballsbridge. Sandymount Green is a triangular park at the centre of the village.

The Catholic church in Sandymount is dedicated to Our Lady Star of the Sea.

The supermarket currently operated by Tesco Ireland was previously part of the Quinnsworth chain, and before that, it was H. Williams. Mapothers on the green was a newsagent, as was The Gem. On the corner opposite Ryan's pub, was Bracken's store which burnt down. Today, many of the family-run businesses have left the village, and franchises such as Tesco, Xtra Vision and Spar have taken over. However, Dunne and Crecenzi, an Italian trattoria, opened at the end of 2004. This restaurant sells good food and wine at reasonable prices.

Sandymount has a station on the electrified (DART) suburban railway system.

Sandymount and Sandymount Strand feature prominently in several episodes of James Joyce's Ulysses.

My fathers family all came orginally from Sandymount , no 6 seafort villas. The house was in my family until approx 1997 when my uncles sold it and moved away. My great grandfather used to ring the bell on the green , my auntie worked for Milligans and the later in the Gem. I remember Tom McCormack owning the green Grocers store and the Dowlings owing the Butcher's. O'reilleys was the high point of the village and my family knew them all well dating back to the late Mr and Mrs O'rielly well before Paul took over. Fond memories indeed of one of the best places in Dublin , i would love to hear from anyone who remembers my family through out the years they live there.
